Objectives: Hot flushes are the subject of research worldwide. However, factors relating to hot flushes have yet to be studied in Korea. Thus, this study examined the factors which may independently influence hot flushes and night sweats.
Methods: We conducted retrospective cross-sectional study among women who attended the Menopause Clinic of The University Hospital in Korea between January 2006 and June 2009. Along with questionnaire-based surveys, body composition, blood sampling, and bone mineral density were measured, A multiple stepwise regression analysis was conducted to examine factors that would independently influence hot flushes and night sweats.
Results: Only the body mass index (P=0.039), menopausal status (early perimenopausal transition, late perimenopausal transition, and postmenopausal, [P=0.133, P=0.004, and P=0.020, respectively]), and palpitation ("occasionally", "frequently", and "many times", [P=0.0001, P=0.003, and P=0.042, respectively]) were predictive factors that influence hot flushes independently. Only follicle stimulating hormone (P=0.010), palpitations ("occasionally", "frequently", and "many times", [P=0.007, P=0.017, and P= 0.026), respectively]), and insomnia ("occasionally", "frequently", and "many times", [P=0.08, P=0.036, and P=0.001, respectively]) were predictive factors that independently influence night sweats.
Conclusion: Our findings show that hot flushes are associated with increased body mass index, menopausal state, and palpitation. Night sweat were shown to be closely related with an increased follicle stimulating hormone level, palpitations and insomnia.
